After reading a few posts on a forum today I thought I would investigate what baggage allowance you are allowed via various airlines. Beginning to wish I hadn't! Total minefield.
If you fly via America then your baggage allowance seems to be doubled. You can take 2 pieces of baggage each weighing no more than 23kg. If you fly any other route then you can only take up to 23kg. We flew via Los Angeles last time we went out and it was an experience I would rather not remember.
However, it looks as if one or two airlines allow you a larger allowance if you are emigrating. One of which is Singapore Airlines. If you have an unstamped Visa then you can take double the baggage (This equates to 40kg for SA). I believe that Air NZ might have a similar policy.
Trying to find this information on the internet is almost impossible. Indeed, trying to find the standard baggage allowance for most airlines is hard enough.
A couple of people on various forums have managed to confirm the extra baggage but recommend you at least email the airline and get confirmation to avoid hassle at the departure airport.
When it comes down to it then it will depend on ticket prices. I might get a great deal with one airline, who allows no extra baggage, or a more expensive ticket with another airline who allow loads. It might still be cheaper to pay the excess baggage fee on the cheap tickets. Then again the excess baggage thing is a minefield as well.
Hopefully I might be able to get a comparison of different airlines policies up here once I have emailed them. As there appears to be no information on the internet I am sure it would be useful to somebody.
